Gautham Krishnan, Project Engineer/Naval Architect based in ALE’s Abu Dhabi branch, has been awarded a first-place ClassNK Project Award for his design of a dual acting drillship with dual fuel propulsion capabilities titled ‘Aurora Galactic’.

ClassNK, the Japanese ship classification society dedicated to ensuring the safety of life and property at sea, run the awards every year in conjunction with the Department of Ship Technology at the Cochin University of Science & Technology in Kerala, India.

A panel of ClassNK members judge the best BTech projects and out of 40 entries Gautham, who has worked for ALE for two years, won the award for his ship design thesis, a unique and complex design of a ship capable of performing both drilling and production functions. The Aurora Galatic has a high variable deck load rating of 22,500t and a targeted drilling depth of 45,000ft.

The thesis scored one of the highest marks in the university’s history and the society also recognised the contribution Gautham’s thesis has made to technology and engineering development in naval architecture and shipping.
