Transportation of over-dimensional cargo, Bahrain

Overview

ALE has successfully transported 16 pieces of over-dimensional cargo (ODC) from Khalifa Bin Salman Port to the Central Gas Plant III project site, Bahrain.

Services Required

The ODC ranged in weight, with some as heavy as 300t, and dimensions, with one column up to 59m long – making it one of the longest items ever moved in the country.

ALE was contracted to provide a barge service from Khalifa Bin Salman Port to Muharraq Jetty using an ALE250 class barge.

One of the most challenging pieces to transport was the de-ethaniser column, weighing 220t and measuring 59m long. This was transported using 48 axle lines of SPMT in a configuration of 4 file 10 and 4 file 14 with a spacer. Due to its excessive length, transportation on public roads proved challenging but was overcome by making minor route modifications and with the assistance from the Bahrain Traffic Police when the column crossed a major highway. In total, the transportation of the column from the jetty to the fabrication workshop took only two hours.
