Transportation and installation of refinery components for the Sohar Refinery Improvement Project, Oman

Overview

ALE were contracted to transport 268 Heavylift (HL)/ Out of Gauge (OOG) units and install 184 HL / OOG units for ORPIC’s Sohar Refinery Improvement Project located in the Sohar Industrial Area, some 230km north west of Muscat.

Services Required

The weights of the HL units varied depending on the components. These comprised of a 920t reactor, as well as 550t bullets, 455t reactors, 169t gas turbine generators, 100t transformers, 380t boilers, 96.5t HRSGs, 471t columns, 220t coke structures and 240t coke drums.

Depending on the piece, ALE utilised 64 axle lines of SPMTs and 48 axle lines of conventional trailers to transport the pieces 2km-4km from port to site laydown area / foundation.

Once in their final positions, ALE used multi-crane lifts to install the components, deploying 1,600t, 750t, 600t, 180t, 100t and 60t cranes, in order to lift each item. ALE needed to move the cranes using SPMTs from one location to the next.

ALE faced the additional challenge of delivering and installing the components within a tight delivery schedule, which happened to be during the hot summer months. It was also logistically complex performing the crane moves on a congested site.

In order to enter the site it also required ALE to cross a water intake culvert with a low ground bearing pressure, which required careful coordination with the local authority and the Royal Oman Police.

It took almost one year to complete the transportation scope and seven months to complete the installation.
